As a renter I can say with confidence that the rent is too damn high. I’ve heard horror stories about properties in our district where tenants are facing long wait times for maintenance services, being wrongly evicted and not being given their security deposits back. When it comes to home ownership, our neighbors are struggling to pay their mortgages and out of control property taxes keep pressure on our homeowners. A new generation of Michiganders, like myself, want to own a home. However, the skyrocketing prices of homes keeps home ownership a far away dream.
Housing Reform
Empower local action on housing affordability by expanding municipalities’ power on rent measures, like rent control, and work in collaboration to update zoning laws to prioritize multi-family housing options.
Expand property tax credits to help seniors stay in their homes and provide homeowners with more financial relief.
Protect renters and future homeowners by strengthening regulations on private equity firms that buy up homes, holding landlords accountable, and passing a Tenant’s Bill of Rights.
